About Me

I’m Colly McGrane, a performance-driven running coach blending science with real-world experience. With a B.Sc. in Environmental Science & Health and years working in personalised nutrition, I know how to optimise the body for peak performance.

As a lifelong athlete in Gaelic football and soccer, I took my own marathon time from 3:40 to 2:49 in just two years—self-coached—while balancing a full-time job, relationships, and a social life. Now, I’m here to help you achieve results you never thought possible, without sacrificing what matters most to you.

My Coaching Philosophy: Training Smart, Running Forever

Running is more than just a sport – it’s a journey of self-improvement, discipline, and discovery. My coaching philosophy centers around a holistic approach, combining science-based training plans with personalized guidance on nutrition, recovery, and mental strength. I believe in training smarter, not just harder, so that you can run stronger for longer, without burning out.

A Balanced Approach to Training

In today’s world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information available. Everywhere we turn, there’s a new training method, a revolutionary superfood, or the latest recovery gadget promising better results. While some of these innovations are useful, many are overhyped, leading to analysis paralysis, a state where too much information leads to inaction or confusion. My role as a coach is to cut through the noise, helping you focus on what truly matters. I bridge the gap between hard science and intuitive, individualized coaching, ensuring that your training is both evidence-based and tailored to your unique needs. This way, you can focus on what really counts: showing up, putting in the work, and improving 1% every day.

The Power of Holistic Training

A truly effective training plan isn’t just about running faster or further. It encompasses physical conditioning, mental resilience, recovery strategies, and lifestyle balance. The best training plans fail if they don’t consider the human component, your daily life, responsibilities, stress levels, and personal goals. The equation is simple: Stress + Recovery = Adaptation. But the complexity lies in understanding how this equation applies to each individual. Your job, sleep, nutrition, natural ability, and mindset all play a role in your success. It’s my job to take these factors into account and balance the equation so that you can achieve sustainable progress without injury or burnout.

Cutting Through the Noise

Social media has made a mess of training strategies, throwing buzzwords at us without context-VO2 Max, anaerobic threshold, Zone 2, HRV, ice baths, intermittent fasting, ketosis. It’s easy to get lost trying to figure out what’s best for you, especially when there’s no universal answer. The truth? There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Even three athletes with identical 5K times can have vastly different physiological responses to the same training. I coach people, not machines.

The Joy of Running

Running is one of the few things in life where your effort is directly proportional to your results. Unlike other areas where external factors can limit progress, running is simple: energy in = energy out. You can’t be robbed of your progress; the work you put in will always reflect in your performance. As Patrick Sang wisely said, “The best competitor is yourself.”

The best part? The barrier for entry is zero. You can run anywhere, anytime. With the right approach, you can do this for as long as you choose. Train smart. Run forever.
